Status: This guide summarises how mail-in entries generally work at US social sweepstakes platforms. Each platform publishes its own Sweeps Rules, and those rules always take priority. Our own mail-in processing timings will be added after our field tests.
Every legitimate US social sweepstakes platform must offer a free way to take part. That free route is the Alternative Method of Entry (AMOE), and for most platforms it means writing a request by hand and posting it. It is what keeps “No Purchase Necessary” true. It is also the route with the most rejections, because the rules are strict and unforgiving.
How the AMOE Works
- Read the platform’s Sweeps Rules. The AMOE section sets out exactly what to write, what size of card or paper to use, where to send it, and any limits.
- Get a request code if one is required. Some platforms require a unique code generated from your account and printed on the request. Codes can expire, so generate it shortly before you write.
- Write the request by hand with every required detail, in the order the rules specify.
- Post it in its own envelope to the address in the Sweeps Rules, with correct postage.
- Wait for processing. Accepted requests are credited as free Sweeps Coins to the account that matches your details.
Formatting Checklist
| Requirement | Common rule | Trap to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Handwriting | Request must be handwritten | Typed, printed or photocopied requests are rejected |
| Card or paper | A specific size is often required | Using a different size or a sticky note |
| Your details | Full name, address and the email on your account | A nickname, old address or a different email |
| Request code | Unique code from your account, where required | Missing, mistyped or expired code |
| Required statement | Some rules ask for a set phrase | Paraphrasing instead of copying it |
| One per envelope | One request per envelope | Several requests or several people in one envelope |
| Return address | On the envelope | Missing, or different from the request |
| Postage | Full postage paid by you | Metered mail or insufficient postage, where the rules exclude it |
Why Requests Get Rejected
- Not handwritten. The single most common rejection. If the rules say handwritten, every part of the request must be handwritten.
- Details that don’t match the account. Name, address and email must match your registered account exactly.
- Code problems. A code that has expired, has been used before, or is copied incorrectly.
- Multiple requests per envelope. Platforms process one request per envelope.
- Ineligible state. Requests from residents of restricted states are not credited. See our state-by-state legality guide.
- Over the limit. Some platforms cap how many requests they accept per person or per period.
- Illegible writing. If a reviewer cannot read your email or code, the request cannot be matched.
Timelines: What to Expect
| Stage | Typical time | What controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Postal delivery (within the US) | A few business days | USPS service and distance |
| Platform processing | Commonly several weeks, per the Sweeps Rules | Request volume at the platform |
| Coins credited | On processing | Platform |
| Total | [Our measured timeline will be added after testing] |
Because processing is slow, the AMOE suits players who plan ahead rather than those who want coins today.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AMOE?
An Alternative Method of Entry is the free way to take part in a promotional sweepstakes without making a purchase. For social sweepstakes platforms it is usually a handwritten request sent by post, which credits free Sweeps Coins when accepted.
Why was my mail-in request rejected?
The most common reasons are typed or printed requests where handwriting is required, missing or mismatched account details, an expired or missing request code where one is required, more than one request per envelope, and requests sent from an ineligible state.
How long does a mail-in entry take?
Allow for postal delivery plus the platform's processing time. Postal delivery inside the US typically takes a few business days, and platforms commonly state that processing can take several weeks. Check each platform's Sweeps Rules for its stated timeline.
Do Sweeps Coins from AMOE have different rules?
They are normally treated the same as other Sweeps Coins, including the playthrough requirement and redemption minimums. Check the platform's Sweeps Rules for any differences.
